Cost Of Starting A Daycare Center

There are two basic ways of beginning daycare services. You can either run the service out of your own home or look for a full scale daycare center to run. If you being the operation out of your own home, you can spend as little as $500 to as much as $5,000 depending upon the remodeling you need to do, the equipment you need to buy and the licensing laws you need to meet.

If you are looking to run a daycare center that operates from an independent business location then you are looking at much greater start-up expenses that could run around $100,000!

These are some of the items that you are going to want to budget for:

- Licensing fees,
- first aid/CPR certification
- High chairs and booster seats
- Nap mats
- Bedding
- Playpens/portable cribs
- Advertising
- Liability insurance
- Safety devices
- First aid kit
- Computer
- Software
- Books
- Toys

But that's not the whole list, you are going to need a few more items inorder to make your daycare center, the talk of the neighnourhood and be able to keep the parents happy. Happy parents will refer your daycare to their friends and family. You may find that having a well equiped daycare may end up helping you save on advertising costs, due to word of mouth advertising.

Other things you may want to include in your budget are:

- Education materials
- Arts $ crafts supplies
- Disposable gloves
- Disposable changing pads
- Antibacterial cleaners
- Good healthy food
- Child-sized tables and chairs
- Sanitary storage containers for used diapers
- Step stools for toilet and sink
- Outdoor play space – There should be sand as well as a hard surface for wheeled toys, etc.
- Make-believe clothes, props and costumes for pretending and dressing up
- Record player or CD player, radio and tape recorder
- Containers for colors, pencils, markers and other art materials

Here are some other very important items that you have to budget for no matter if you are running the daycare out of your home or you are operating it as an independent business:

1. Permits – Just like any other business, a daycare needs permits such as a business license, fire-safety permit, and other permits that each state or county may require. These permits are not cost prohibitive. They usually only cost a few dollars a year.

2. Insurance – This is a very important issue and every business should make sure they have adequate insurance. The premiums are a bit pricey, but small daycare centers will only have to pay a small premium whereas large daycare centers will have to pay a lot more for their insurance. It is best to do some comparison shopping when you go to buy your insurance.

3. Equipment – Purchasing all of the needed equipment for your daycare center will definitely cost you some money, but most of these items are a one time cost and should serve you for a long time. You may be able to get by with as little as $300 if you are just running a business out of your home. The cost will be considerably more for an independent daycare center.

The cost of starting a daycare center may seem overwhelming at first but it is far little in comparison to the potential to make money in this business. What a great opportunity this is!

How Day Care Centers Can Improve Child Development

Though many parents don't realize it, a child's development is closely connected to their child care environment. Development in child care facilities, particularly during their toddler years, can have a huge impact on children. There are a number of stages that a child may go through, and the level of a child's development in a child care facility generally depends on the facility's approach to learning. Special care in a child's development should always be taken.

Types of Development Occurring in Child Care Facilities

There are many types of development that occur both in child care facilities and outside of them. Social development is one example of this. Social development is something that occurs as a child matures and ages. One very important factor in social development is allowing a child to interact with other children. This is an area that child care facilities definitely play a major role in developing. Day care centers and other child care facilities allow children to come into contact with many other children that they may not have otherwise been exposed to had they been taken care of by a babysitter or a nanny.

Not only can children develop better socially in day care centers because they are around other children that are not from their family, but also because they're coming in contact with children that may be very different from themselves. Children can be exposed to other kids from completely different social, ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds. This is not something they would be able to do in most other types of child care settings.

Children may also learn language skills in day care centers. This is due to the fact that toddlers, in particular, tend to learn a lot by speaking or babbling with the older children. Also, many child care facilities will mix activities such as singing and rhyming in with their lessons. This type of learning can greatly aid children in developing their language skills.

Other activities like free-play can allow toddlers and young children to develop their physical coordination and motor skills. Motor development skills are also encouraged through the implementation of activities such as puzzles and painting. If children are fed properly at day care centers, as many now encourage, they are also receiving help with their physical well-being.

Day care centers and other similar child care facilities can help children develop many other necessary skills as well as the ability to learn better. For example, children tend to develop their imagination through pretend play with other kids. Also, they become more active learners as they're able to use different toys and other learning materials that may not be available to them in their home environment. This type of active learning can also help children develop greater attention spans, as they may have to entertain themselves at certain times.

Starting a child day care

If you are about to start your very own childcare business here are a few pointers you ought to keep in mind.

1. What kind of business are you trying to set up? - Are you looking to operate your business right from your home or will you be more interested in traveling to your business? Working from your own home is a great option if your house has ample space. But incase your house doesn't have that sort of space provisions, or if working from home is not an option for you consider a franchise arrangement with other companies in the same business.

2. Have you updated yourself about the legal requirements of your proposed business? - Even before you start, you need to find out the kind of licenses and legal conditions you will require from your local business services.Remember to also enquire about the specific qualifications needed to earn them and how much they are likely to cost you. Your legal requirements will be totally determined by the location of your business. Usually they include health code regulations and inspections along with fire code etc.

3. Are you qualified to begin your own business? - You might consider it unnecessary but training yourself in the proper method is extremely important before starting your business. Do take all special training (which may include everything from first aid classes, CPR etc.) and certifications (in subjects such as childcare and childcare development) that maybe required for you to make your business successful. Remember your certifications will legitimize your business in the eyes of potential buyers and should therefore prove an asset.

4. Are you aware of the insurance needs of your future business? - Make sure you find out all about the insurance requirements of your future business. Insurance will help you deal with any accidental injury or damage, which might affect your business. In case you choose to run your business from your home you may have to increase the limits of your current policy or even buy a totally new policy. Even if you are running your business from outside insurance should be one of your primary concerns.

5. Have you surveyed your market? - Before you begin to make all the arrangements required for the business just go out there and survey the location you have chosen. For all you know your place you have opted for doesn't need another childcare provider.

Find out the status of the other childcare providers in the area. Do they have their hands full with work? Do they have more clients than they can honestly handle or are they expanding quickly to meet demands? Is their business growing in a consistent basis or is theirs only a moderately profitable establishment? Choose a location which needs you rather than a place which is convenient for you.

6. What do you need? - Take some time out and clearly jot down everything that you are likely to need in order to begin. Against each of the items you note write down an estimated price. Compare the ultimate sum of these prices with your total budget. Remember childcare is not child's play and requires hard work (and by that we mean physical work). Don't overestimate your resources. Are you capable of handling the entire business or do you need extra help? Planning in advance will go a long way in ensuring the success of your business.
